8 Ways to Feel More Creative When You’re Burnt Out

Burnout doesn’t always look like exhaustion.
Sometimes it looks like:
feeling uninspired
not wanting to start anything
or feeling like you’ve “lost” your creativity
And the worst part is, the more you try to force yourself to be creative, the harder it feels.
Because creativity doesn’t come from pressure.
It comes from space.
Here are 8 ways to feel more creative again, without forcing it:
1. Stop trying to be creative
This sounds backwards, but it works.
The more pressure you put on yourself to “come up with something,” the more blocked you feel.
Take a break from creating—and just exist for a bit.
2. Consume, don’t produce
Read. Watch movies. Scroll Pinterest. Listen to podcasts.
Let yourself take in inspiration without expecting anything from yourself.
Creativity needs input before it can become output.
3. Go somewhere new
Even something small—like a new coffee shop or a different place to walk.
New environments give your brain something different to respond to.
4. Try something you’re bad at
When you remove the expectation of being good, you free yourself to experiment.
And that’s where creativity starts again.
5. Give yourself less time
Instead of waiting for the “perfect” moment, set a short amount of time—like 20 minutes—and just start.
Short bursts feel less overwhelming.
6. Move your body
Walking, stretching, pilates—anything.
Movement helps reset your mind and creates space for new ideas.
7. Stop comparing your work
Comparison is one of the fastest ways to shut down creativity.
Your work doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.
It just needs to exist.
8. Let it be imperfect
Not everything you create needs to be shared.
Not everything needs to be good.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do is create something that’s just for you.
Creativity doesn’t disappear.
It just gets buried under pressure, expectations, and burnout.
The more you let go of needing it to be perfect, the easier it is to find it again.
